What We Do

Care for Every Stage of Kidney Disease

From dialysis and patient support to prevention, education and organ donation, this is everything BKF does, in one place.

Every programme exists for one reason: so that no one in Karnataka has to stop treatment because they cannot pay for it.

Programme 01

Dialysis & Patient Support

Reliable, affordable dialysis and ongoing care for patients managing chronic kidney disease, at subsidised or free cost for those in need.

Maintenance dialysis costs roughly ₹24,000–₹30,000 a month, far out of reach for families living on daily wages. BKF brings that cost down by around half at our 45-bed centre in Bengaluru, through subsidised, concessional and fully free sessions, along with the clinical monitoring and counselling that keep patients stable between sessions.

  • 45-bed centre in Bengaluru
  • Dialysis costs cut by around half
  • 3 lakh+ subsidised sessions
  • 17,000+ people supported
Programme 02

Awareness & Prevention

Community screening and education drives that catch kidney disease risk early, before it becomes a crisis.

Diabetes and hypertension quietly damage the kidneys, and the disease is nearly silent in its early stages, so many patients first reach a hospital when dialysis is already the only option. BKF runs screening camps in at-risk communities and follows up everyone flagged with monitoring and counselling, so they can stay off dialysis for good.

  • Screening camps in at-risk communities
  • Continuous follow-up for anyone flagged
  • Counselling on lifestyle changes
Programme 03

Taking Dialysis to Patients

31 rural dialysis centres, so patients receive treatment close to home instead of travelling to the city.

Travelling 100 km or more three times a week is exhausting and expensive, and for most families impossible to sustain, so sessions get missed and health deteriorates. Each rural centre means a patient can keep working, live with their family and attend every session, instead of choosing between treatment and a day’s wages.

  • 31 rural dialysis centres across Karnataka
  • Treatment close to home
  • No more long trips for every session
Programme 04

Education Support for Patients’ Children

Helping the children of dialysis patients continue their education, so illness in the family doesn’t derail a child’s future.

When a parent develops kidney disease, income falls just as medical costs climb, and school fees are often the first thing sacrificed. Supporting these children is one of the clearest ways we interrupt the cycle in which kidney disease pushes a family into long-term poverty.

  • Support with school education
  • Keeps children in school
  • Breaks the cycle of poverty
Programme 05

Women’s Dialysis Unit

A dedicated floor offering free and subsidised dialysis to underprivileged women, with the privacy and comfort this care deserves.

Women with kidney disease are less likely to receive treatment than men: household money goes elsewhere, and mixed wards discourage many from continuing. Our women’s floor removes those reasons, so women stay on dialysis and stay well.

  • A dedicated floor for women
  • Free and subsidised dialysis
  • Designed for privacy and dignity
Programme 06

Free Nutrition & Medication

Nutritional support, essential medicines and diagnostic tests for patients who cannot afford them.

Dialysis alone is not enough. Patients need the right nutrition, regular medication and periodic tests for treatment to hold, and fatigue, weakness and loss of appetite are common. BKF provides these free of charge so recovery is never undone by what happens between sessions.

  • Nutritional supplements
  • Essential medicines
  • Diagnostic tests, free of charge
Programme 07

Kidney Transplantation & Organ Pledge

Guidance through the government’s official NOTTO/SOTTO system, for transplant registration and for pledging organs the right way.

A renal transplant is the sustainable long-term alternative to years of dialysis, and success rates in India are high. What is missing is donors. We raise awareness of live and deceased donation and guide families through official registration. Every pledge is voluntary and unpaid; buying or selling organs is a criminal offence in India.

Programme 08

Research

Working alongside partner hospitals on research into kidney disease prevention, dialysis outcomes and transplant care.

Treating patients one at a time is necessary, but it does not change the conditions that keep producing new patients. With partner institutions and volunteers skilled in data analytics, we study who is developing kidney disease and why, and use what we learn to sharpen our screening, prevention and treatment.

  • Partner hospitals and institutions
  • Volunteer data analysts
  • Findings feed back into our programmes
